I had never heard of this remarkable woman until our Pastor mentioned her to me. I was blown away with her story. Her faith, determination, and leadership are so inspiring. And her legacy is one that deserves more attention.That said, the book itself was just ok. It was written in an engaging way, but I take issue with some of the things the author says about McPherson. He seems awfully (and sometimes uncomfortably) preoccupied with her physical appearance, as if that was often the main draw for people. He also makes strange, sometimes subtle and sometimes obvious, comments about the power of suggestion and hypnosis being mistaken for the Holy Spirit or being the real reason behind miraculous healings. He characterizes her as being dramatic in such a way that people just got caught up in her presentation and personality, and maybe their immunes systems or something responded.I don't deny that there have been some crackpots in the history of the Church. But from what I have read, McPherson was legit. People were healed of crazy things at her services. Rheumatoid Arthritis, broken limbs, festering wounds, burns, the list goes on. These healings are documented in newspaper articles from that time, as well as accounts from witnesses. The author addresses the healings, but occasionally tries to explain them away.If you're skeptical about the Holy Spirit or Christianity in general, McPherson's story should inspire curiosity, if not faith. I have personally seen people healed of Hepatitis C, sarcoidosis, scleroderma, burns, head injuries, and flu complications. The Holy Spirit is real and He does amazing things if you ask!
