Overall, this is an okay story. The basis of the story is unique, as are the characters. I wouldn't call them lovable, but they are interesting and probably more "realistic" than what you would find in most fantasy novels blended with reality. They have struggles, internal issues and there's definitely no "love at first sight" here. And that's a good thing. It means you're invested in following along the journey they take as they grow into something more.The challenge here, is that journey has a lot of hiccups to it. Probably the biggest one is that 1/3 of the story is about bad guys you don't care about and have no investment in. They bring no enjoyment and while integral to the story, there's entirely too much time spent on them and their actions that really isn't necessary. When you get to the end of the book, it becomes obvious why. This was meant to be a short story and the author fleshed it out just barely enough to call it a novel. The problem with that is you get a LOT of issues when you take what is meant to be a short story and blow it up. You get characters you don't care about added in as a bunch of filler to increase page count.You also get issues like an Army vet who is rather superfluous when it comes to the fighting in the story, and who wishes he had a firearm so he could contribute to the fight, yet the author offers literally NO explanation as to why this well trained individual didn't have a single brain cell to think of arming himself before going into what he knew would be a very tough fight.You also get filler like the "visions" this vet has of his old squad mates who all died. Yet the visions are so real that there is literally no way this person could be a functional member of society given the level of delusions he was having. Once again, instead of what should be "real" issues, you get pages of visions and discussions in the soldier's head that feel very much like filler.None of this makes it a bad story, but what it does do is make a book that really should be 100 pages, instead over 200 pages, and then has an associated price attached to that increased size. And i don't think the author did all these things on purpose as if she was just doing it for the extra money, i think she truly wanted this to be a full length novel because it was a worthy concept... she just did a bad job when expanding it.So... it's a decent read, but if i had it to do again, i probably wouldn't buy it.
