Over the years, David Pogue's O'Reilly books about Apple products have been essential references for me, and as I have upgraded various devices, I have continued to purchase his revised volumes. Suddenly, however, things have changed markedly.Pogue now has a new publisher whose obvious first concern is cutting costs. Accordingly, _Mac Unlocked_, which is essentially a sequel to _macOS Catalina: The Missing Manual_ (1) is half the length of its predecessor; (2) uses typography in text and tip boxes that is so faint that it's almost unreadable; (3) shrinks some screenshots to the point of severe eyestrain; (4) does not include any "bonus material" that was part and parcel of his O'Reilly series (5) is only $5.00 cheaper than his previous O'Reilly book, despite all of the aforementioned deficiencies. And as of this writing (December 15, 2020), it is not discounted at all on Amazon.I'm glad that Pogue has managed to keep his insights going in print, but the price for doing so seems to involve unfortunate compromises. His newest contribution certainly looks worthwhile, but the exceptional value from the old days is no longer there.
